6 Farm Animal Activities for Preschoolers
Share
Little kids learn best with their hands, and farm animals are a perfect way in. Here are six simple activities we love for ages 3–5. Each takes about 15–30 minutes, uses things you probably already have, and works best with a grown-up nearby.
1. Cow Milk Swirl
Pour a little milk on a plate, add drops of food coloring, and touch the middle with a cotton swab dipped in dish soap. The colors swirl and burst. Talk about where milk comes from while you watch.
2. Duck Sink or Float
Fill a tub with water and gather bath toys, a cork, a spoon and a leaf. Ask "Will it float like a duck or sink?" before each one goes in.
3. Mama and Baby Match
Print or draw farm animal mamas and babies: cow and calf, sheep and lamb, hen and chick. Mix them up and help your child find each pair. It's an easy first lesson that babies look like their parents.
4. Cotton-Ball Sheep
Draw a simple sheep shape, then glue on cotton balls for wool. If you can find a scrap of real wool or yarn, let them feel the difference between soft and rough.
5. Walking Rainbow for the Bunny Garden
Set three cups in a row: colored water, empty, colored water. Bridge them with folded paper towels. Over an hour or two, the colors climb the towels and mix in the middle cup.
6. Backyard Worm Hunt
After a rain, flip a few stones or dig a little soil and look for earthworms with a magnifying glass. Count them, then gently put them back. Worms are the farm's little helpers that make healthy dirt.
